Wellington Golf Rep Season Gathers Momentum

Following on from a successful result against Hawkes Bay, the Wellington Team traveled to Blenheim in the weekend to play their annual fixture against Marlborough.
This match is a long held fixture against the Marlborough sub union, and Wellington traditionally field a team excluding current Senior Team members, and including Masters and promising Juniors.

Played in trying conditions at the Marlborough Golf Club's Fairhall course, the team, led by Masters Captain Malcolm Gullery got underway Saturday morning with the foursomes matches, which saw Marlborough gain a 3-2 advantage.  The afternoon singles matches had Wellington winning 5.5 - 4.5 to draw level at 7.5 each with a round to go.  Sunday morning and Marlborough won a close contest 5.5 - 4.5 to win 13 - 12 and claim the Marwell Cup.

Standouts for Wellington were unbeaten players Mark Whalen with 3 wins and Brad Rowland with 2 wins and a half.

This coming weekend sees four Wellington teams playing together against Manawatu/Wanganui at the Levin Golf Club on Sunday over two rounds of singles matches. The Senior Men, Masters Men, Junior Boys and Senior Women all field full teams of 12, 6, 6 and 8 players respectively. The team of 32 will be lead overall by Jonno Cane and sees strength right across the board in what is a key match moving forward towards the heart of the Representative calendar as players push their case for future selection and Wellington look to gain momentum towards the National Interprovincial events later in the year.
